There are several uses for graphics in the context for Warpstock Europe:

  • Corporate identity
  • Advertisements on other web sites and in printed media
  • Merchandising
  • Link exchange programme

To achieve the maximum effect, graphics should be created as early as possible.

Contents

[Edit]1 Logos

These can be used for all the purposes mentioned above.

It has two purposes:

  • Establish a link to the city/region/country of the event location
  • Establish brand recognition

The following requirements apply:

  • Mind readability of included text!
  • Not too many details. They get lost at small sizes or when printed on t-shirts, cups, etc.
  • Graphics used for printing on merchandising ware require high resolution
  • At web site provide logo images at different sizes, max. 256 colours
  • Subject should be related to the city/region of the event location, e.g., city's landmarks, city's/region's crest colours.

The above rules out photographs. If you want to use things like landmarks, use a stylised version.

Examples:

  • silhouette of Düsseldorf's cartwheeler ("Radschläger")
  • silhouette of a falcon (the name Valkenswaard is derived from falconry)
  • sketch of lifting brigde with traffic lights for ships (Amsterdam is famous for its "grachten," a system of narrow canals)
  • silhouette of the spires of the cathedral of Cologne with a curved line in between as the river Rhine and a W for Warpstock below

[Edit]2 Banner

The banner images are used for advertisements on other web sites and the link exchange programme only.

The following requirements apply:

  • standard resolution 468x60 pixel
  • Mind readability of included text!
  • Not too many details. They get lost at small sizes and make overlaying text hard to read.
  • Keep file size small for short loading times

Examples:

  • Small, partial version of header image (see below)
  • Rearranged version of logo

[Edit]3 Header image

This image is used as the background of the web site header.

It has three purposes:

  • Establish a link to the city/region/country of the event location
  • Act as a coloured counterbalance to the mostly grey site design
  • Make the web sites of different events distinguishable

The following requirements apply:

  • Resolution: 1280x136 pixel minimum
  • File format: usually JPEG
  • Luscious colours. You may want to use an image manipulation tool to increase colour saturation, e.g., of the sky.
  • Subject should be related to the city/region of the event location, e.g., cities' landmarks.
  • Important details have to be visible in the lower 136 pixel
  • Center left part and low right part are covered by the web site title and the mini menu. The mini menu uses a partially transparant background to compensate for busy details in the header image by default. This is not possible for the web site title, though. Because of that, the image is usually left justified.

Examples:

  • panorama of a field with a windmill for Valkenswaard in the Netherlands
  • panorama of the river Rhine with its banks, a bridge, and a view of the historic old city of Düsseldorf
  • collage of a number of landmarks of Cologne

[Edit]4 Favicon

This image is used for display in the URL location bar and bookmarks of browsers. It is rather small.

The following requirements apply:

  • Resolution: 16x16 or 32x32 pixel (latter is scaled to 16x16)
  • File format: Windows icon if old IEs should be able to load it, otherwise PNG or GIF
  • High contrast so details are visible
  • Not many details possible
  • Use main component of logo

Examples:

  • silhouette of Düsseldorf's cartwheeler ("Radschläger")
  • silhouette of a falcon (the name Valkenswaard is derived from falconry)
  • silhouette of dish and W of Warpstock as antenna
